Cleveland Indians Assistant Director of Communications Joel Hammond

ERIE, PA (January 3, 2017) – How does managing 1.3 million Facebook fans and 636,000 Twitter followers sound? Welcome to Joel Hammond’s life.

Hammond is in his fifth season with the Cleveland Indians as Assistant Director of Communications. He oversees the club’s social media efforts and contributes to the organization’s overall public relations initiatives.

He will share his experiences managing the Indians’ social media and also offer several best practices when he visits Erie next month for a special luncheon presentation.

Hammond’s presentation, “Social in the Pros: Long hours, lots of fun and an occasional World Series,” will be held Thursday, February 2, at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with his talk to follow at noon. His visit is co-sponsored by the Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the Erie SeaWolves.

“Social media management is a regular part of the job for many folks in Erie, but no organization has an audience as large as the one that Joel interacts with on a daily basis,” said Steve Orbanek, president of NWPA PRSA. “With social media, content is key, but that’s especially true when you’re dealing with an audience that is into the millions. Any social media manager, public relations professional or communications student can benefit from hearing how Joel goes about creating content that’s both engaging and fun.”

During his talk, Hammond will also touch on the media relations aspects of his job, including the challenges of working with professional athletes and how he overcomes the language barriers present with many Latino players.

Cost to attend the presentation, which includes lunch, is $20 for PRSA members or students and $30 for non-members. Attendees can register for the presentation by filling out this form.

The Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is a professional organization that brings together public relations, communications and marketing practitioners throughout Erie, PA.

The Erie SeaWolves are the Double-A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. The team will open its 23rd season on Thursday, April 6 against the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees) at 6:35 p.m.
